‘Govt working for mainstreaming disabled population’

Government officials at a function today said the present government is working to flourish talents and abilities of the physically challenged population to ensure their inclusive development, human rights and social dignity for mainstreaming them in the society.

They viewed this at a wheelchair distribution ceremony organised by Gram Bikash Kendra (GBK) under the ‘Pathways to Prosperity for Extremely Poor People (PPEPP-EU) project at Gangachara upazila parishad premises in the district.

The project is being implemented with the assistance of the European Union (EU) and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) to assist the extremely poor in attaining sustainable development to build a developed Bangladesh leaving no one behind.

Gangachara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nahid Tamanna attended the ceremony as the chief guest with Gangachara Branch Manager of GBK Md Mehedi Hassan in the chair.

Gangachara Upazila Social Services Officer Md Mosaddekur Rahman addressed the function as a special guest.

Project Coordinator of the PPEPP-EU project of GBK for the North-West Region Nitai Chandra Roy, its Technical Officer (Livelihoods), Md Shahinur Islam, Technical Officer (Community Mobilisation), Md Ziaur Rahman and Technical Officer (Nutrition) Suraiya Akhter Rakhi also spoke.

Mosaddekur Rahman said the present government has taken massive steps and is working for the well-being of physically challenged people to ensure their rights and sustainable development.

“Physically challenged people have enormous latent talents and they could do the same as able citizens if adequate opportunities were provided to them for enjoying the basic human rights like others,” he said.

Terming the people with disability as integral part of society, the chief guest stressed on mainstreaming them with all development activities through ensuring their basic rights they deserve like other privileged sections in the society.

She stressed on creating opportunities for people with disabilities through GO-NGO collaboration for income generating activities to assist them in becoming self-reliant and leading dignified lives.(BSS)
