BWDB employee gets 4-yr jail, fined Taka 43-lakh

A court here today sentenced a female office
assistant of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) to four year rigorous
jail term on charges of illegally earning huge assets and concealing
information.

The court also fined the convict Taka 43-lakh and ordered to confiscate the
embezzled Taka 43-lakh in favor of the state and deposit the money in the
government treasury within the next two months.

Judge Md Haider Ali of the Special Judge Court of Rangpur announced the
verdict in presence of convict Hasna Banu Lipi in the courtroom this
afternoon.

Later, she was later taken to Rangpur Central Jail under police guard.

Prosecution says Hasna Banu accumulated huge assets while working as an
office assistant at the Office of the Superintending Engineer at Rangpur
Circle Office of BWDB.

Rangpur District Combined Office of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC)
conducted a primary investigation and found that Hasna Banu illegally earned
Taka 43-lakh through corruption.

Later, Assistant Director of ACC Md Zakaria filed a case against Hasna Banu
in this connection under the Anti Corruption Commission Act in 2016.

After conducting investigation into the case, the ACC submitted a charge
sheet against Hasna Banu to the court when the trial began.

After examination and cross-examination of seven witnesses during the hearing
in the case, the Judge found the accused guilty and announced the verdict
against her today.

Talking to journalists on the court premises, ACC lawyer Advocate Harunur
Rashid said that justice has been established through this verdict.

On the other hand, Advocate Abdul Haque Pramanik, lawyer of the accused, said
that his client did not get justice and they would appeal against the verdict
to higher court. (BSS)
