Death toll from trawler capsize in Padma reaches 8

The rescue team today found another body of a child three days after a trawler hired for picnic capsized in the River Padma near Rashkathi village of Lauhajang upazila in the district, raising the death toll to 8.

“The fire service personnel recovered the body of the child near Subochoni bazaar, almost one kilometer away from the place of occurrence, around 8.15am”, said rescue team leader Kayes Ahmed.

Authorities identified the deceased as Turan Ahmed, 8, son of Arif Hossain, hailed from Koirakhola village under Latabdi union of Lauhajang upazila.

Ahmed said at least two children are still accounted for as his team in assistance with coast guard is also carrying out rescue operation to search them.

The salvage operation started immediately after the trawler with about 46 passengers on board sank in an apparent hit by a sand loaded ‘bulkhead’ in a tributary of the Padma River on Saturday night.

As many as 36 people so far were recovered alive by the recue team.

A five member probe committee has also been formed by the district administration over the incident. (BSS)
