ICT calls for maintaining objectivity in publishing news

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today
called for maintaining objectivity while publishing or broadcasting news to
avoid confusion by the spread of misinformation.

The three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder came up
with the observations as a reporter of daily Kalbela appeared before the ICT
today and offered unconditional apology for wrong information in his report.

Reporter Ali Ibrahim made the report on January 16, stating the ICT has
ordered to submit wealth statements of 75 influential people from the last
Awami League (AL) government, whereas no such order has been passed by the
tribunal.

The tribunal on that day issued a suo moto order, asking him to appear before
it today and give explanation in this regard.

Following the order, the concerned reporter appeared before the tribunal
today and offered unconditional apology through his counsel Md Khademul
Islam. Terming the misinformation as the reporter’s unintentional mistake,
the lawyer said that the daily published a corrigendum the next day.

Exonerating the newsman, the tribunal said the journalists take our verdicts
to the public through their news and journalism is a noble occupation.

“… But make reports after knowing and understanding the orders and verdicts
of the tribunal correctly to avoid confusion and misinformation as it spreads
in home and abroad quickly,” the tribunal added. (BSS)
