The National Girl Child Day-2023 was celebrated in the district on Saturday with a view to developing girl children as worthy citizens for building a prosperous Bangladesh.
This year’s theme of the day was ‘Somoyer Ongikar: Konyashishur Odhikar’ (Rights of girl children: a timely pledge).
Marking the day, upazila administration and upazila women Affairs Office jointly chalked out the elaborate programmes.
In the morning, a grand rally was brought out in the upazila town. Later, a discussion was also held at the conference room of the upazila administration with UNO Tariqul Islam in the chair.
Upazila chairman Ashraful Alam Sarker Lebu addressed the function as the chief guest.
Assistant commissioner (Land) Masudur Rahman, upazila women affairs officer Sumi Kawsar, organizing secretary of upazila Awami League Hafiza Begum Kakoli, general secretary of upazila mohila jatiya party Ferdousi Begum and local journalist Abdul Mannan Akond.
The speakers urged all including the private organizations to work together with the government for overall protection and development of girl children of the country.
They also emphasized for protecting girls’ rights, education, nutrition and security aimed at building a happy and prosperous Bangladesh.
Upazila chairman Ashraful Alam Sarker Labu in his speeches underlined the need for protecting the girl children from dowry, child marriage, eve teasing and all sorts of social and family disparities and repressions,
UNO Tariqul Islam in his concluding speeches said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been implementing various welfare programmes like stipend, free books distribution for the girls of the country since 2009.
A large number of people from all walks of life, civil society members, invited persons and much media men took part in the programmes.
Similar programmes were also held in other six upazila headquarters of the district marking the day. (BSS)
