RMU infuse s dynamism in expanding medical education

Rajshahi Medical University (RMU) has infused dynamism in expanding medical education to a greater extent arranging competent and devoted workforces as it has already achieved academic excellence.

Around 13,500 students are being enrolled to 77 medical, nursing, dental colleges and other institutions under RMU’s jurisdiction every year as its registrar office has been implementing all the scheduled works competently, sources said.

RMU vice-chancellor (VC) Prof A ZM Mostaque Hossain said Taka 2,400-crore revised development project proposal (DPP) has been approved in the ECNEC meeting on November 9 last for these purposes.

With this breakthrough, there are no more obstacles towards land acquisition and infrastructural development.

They will start their cherished works of land acquisition and infrastructural development in phases soon after getting the fund allocation.

“We have given highest importance on DPP formulation side by side with academic and administrative activities since taking responsibility of my office,” he added.

An around 68-acre site at Barabangram in the city and Baroipara and Baze Silinda area under Paba Upazila in the district has been selected for establishing the medical university.

There is a provision of founding a 1200-bed specialized hospital in the university campus aimed at providing health services to the people in the region.

Prof Hossain said the university will provide 68 post-graduation degrees under ten faculties. Besides, research will be conducted aimed at elevating the healthcare services to the level of international standard.

In the first phase, 21 important buildings, including academic, administrative, hospital, nursing college, school, daycare centre, central library, VC’s bunglow, doctor and nursing hostels and mortuary, will be constructed.

As the new university, Prof Hossain said utmost emphasis was given on appointing experienced and competent persons in different vital posts to run all the administrative and academic activities smoothly.

In terms of contractual appointments, transparency and accountability were fully ensured and as a result, dynamism has been infused into operational activities of the university, he added.

Apart from this, appointments were made in line with the decision of syndicate and allocation along with following the approved rules of the university grants commission in this regard.
Prof Hossain vowed to build the medical university as a center of excellence in medical education and research.

A competent and experienced administration has been formed with the committed teachers and professionals for operating administrative and academic activities successfully, he said.

This is the high time to generate skilled and competent workforces in the health sector to cope with the Covid-19 like pandemic situations, he went on saying.

There are 77 affiliated institutions, including 13 government and 13 non-government medical colleges, two government and five non-government dental colleges, six government and 31 non-government nursing colleges, one government and two non-government institutes of health technology and Hamdard Unani Medical College and Hospital under the university.

The RMU has been conducting MBBS, BDS, BSc in Nursing, BSc in Physiotherapy and Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) courses since the 2017-18 academic session successfully.

All activities including data entry, students’ registration and form fill-up for examination are being executed digitally through rmu.edu.bd website from anywhere and anytime.

“We have plans of launching post-graduate courses, including PhD, under the existing eight faculties of the university as soon as possible.” Prof Hossain added. (BSS)
