The 52nd death anniversary of Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh was observed at Nur Mohammad Nagar in Chandibarpur union under Sadar upazila in a befitting manner today.
The Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh Trust and Narail District Administration jointly organised the various programmes to mark the day.
The programmes began with rally, placing of wreaths and presenting guard of honour at the memorial monument in Nur Mohammad Nagar.
Discussion, Qurankhani, Doa Mahfil and special prayer were also held in Nur Mohammad Sheikh Library and Memorial Museum at Nur Mohammad Nagar which was earlier known as Mahiskhola where he was born, was named after him in his honour in Chandibarpur union in Narail Sadar upazila.
Deputy Commissioner of Narail who also president of Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh Trust Muhammad Asfaqul Haque Chowdhury addressed the discussion as chief guest, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Shashoti Shil, Additional Police Super Tarek Al Mehedi, Senior Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) Bibi Korimunnesa, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Selim Ahmed, Nezarat Deputy Collector (NDC) Md. Asif Uddin Mia, District Education Officer M Jahangir Alom, Freedom Fighter Advocate SA Matin and son of Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh Mostofa Kamal, among others, were present.
Nur Mohammad Sheikh Trust’s member secretary and Chandibarpur Union Parishad Chairman Azizur Rahman Bhuyan presided over the function.
Nur Mohammad was born on February 26 in 1936. He joined the then East Pakistan Rifles (EPR), which is now Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), on February 26 in 1959.
He, later, took part in the Liberation War in 1971.
Nur Mohammad braced martyrdom in shooting by Pakistan occupation forces on September 5, 1971 at Goalhati in Jashore during the war.
He was buried in Kashipur area in Sharsha upazila of Jashore. (BSS)
