4,032 homeless to get houses in Rangpur division tomorrow

A number of 4,032 more homeless people will get new houses as gifts from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the fourth phase (second installment) of Asrayan-2 project in the division tomorrow.

“Each of the selected 4,032 families will get a new house built at a cost of around Taka four lakh in the division tomorrow,” Divisional Commissioner Md. Habibur Rahman told BSS.

The newly constructed abodes will be handed over aiming at providing houses to every landless and homeless people across the division as elsewhere in the country.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to launch handing over ownership of the new houses distributing keys and land registration documents to the homeless families through a videoconferencing from Ganabhaban,” Rahman said.

The government has allocated over Taka 256.87 crore for construction of 9,029 houses in all eight districts of Rangpur division in the fourth phase of Asrayan-2 project.

Earlier, the government allocated Taka 368.97 crore for construction of 15,956 houses in the third phase, Taka 224.18 crore for 13,130 houses in the first phase and Taka 239.69 crore for construction of 12,436 houses in the second phase here.

Under the Asrayan-2 project, 13,130 homeless families have got houses in the first phase, 12,436 families in the second phase, 15,956 families in the third phase and 5,408 families in the first installment of the fourth phase in Rangpur division, Rahman added.

Meanwhile, the selected homeless families in the installment of the fourth phase are excitedly waiting to get colorful abodes with corrugated iron sheets on roofs, two bedrooms, one kitchen, one hygienic sanitary latrine, one utility space and veranda.

Talking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Mohammad Mobasswer Hasan said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will distribute 678 houses in the second installment of the fourth phase to homeless families tomorrow in the district.

Earlier, 4,486 new houses, including 1,273 under the first phase, 991 under the second phase and 1,073 under third phase of Asrayan-2 project, were distributed to homeless and landless families of all eight upazilas in Rangpur.

Asrayan Project is one of the prime minister’s 10 special initiatives aimed at ensuring shelter for all homeless people to assist them rebuild life, improve living standard, health care and develop skill on income generating activities.

The government began distributing the brick-built tin-shed semi-pucca houses among landless and homeless families marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the Mujib Year to ensure shelters for all.

“In order to build a smart and developed Bangladesh where no one will lag behind, various government departments are providing training and support to resettled families to make them self-reliant through income-generating activities,” Hasan said. (BSS)
