Distribution of 25,000 coconut saplings begins in Bhola

A total of 25,000 coconut sapling of advanced varieties is being distributed among the 5,000 small and marginal farmers in seven upazilas of the district.

Recently, the saplings are being distributed with the aim of increasing coconut production in the district at the initiative of the local agriculture department. As a result, 100 percent utilization of the fallow land next to the house is ensured.

These improved varieties of coconut sapling produce a large yield within 4-5 years, Md Hasan Warisul Kabir, Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said.

He said that coconut trees grow well in saline land and it has a wide yield potential in coastal areas. Coconut production has been going on in this district since ancient times. So, the government took this initiative to encourage the farmers to increase its production.

Of the beneficiaries, 700 farmers are in Sadar upazila, 395 in Daulatkhan upazila, 540 in Borhanuddin upazila, 635 in Lalmohan upazila, 315 in Tajumuddin upazila, 2,100 in Charfashion upazila and 3,15 in Manpura upazila.

The distribution work will be completed within this week, Hasan added. (BSS)
