Broadcast Journalist Centre (BJC), a forum of the country’s mainstream electronic media, today congratulated the government for the ongoing drive against illegal IP TVs and YouTube channels on the charges of extortion and harassment.
Earlier, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) and Chattogram Union of Journalists (CUJ) congratulated the information and broadcasting minister and concerned authorities for launching the drive.
A statement, signed by BJC chairman Rezwanul Haque and member secretary Shakil Ahmed, said the BJC has been demanding for a long time to take actions against illegal IP TV and YouTube channels which are involved in extortion, blackmailing and harassment.
They urged the information minister and concerned authorities to continue the drive.
District magistrates are conducting a nationwide operation as per the directive given by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in a letter to all deputy commissioners in this regard on June 18 last.
As part of the operation, on July 3, a mobile court in Rangpur fined Taka 50,000 to Prime Cable Network for using expired license while on June 28, two organizations in Purbo Jaflong of Sylhet were fined Taka 50,000 and Taka 70,000 for not airing clean feed foreign TV channels and using expired license respectively.
On June 25, Chattogram Executive Magistrate Ehsan Murad and Himadri Khisa sealed the offices of four unauthorized IPTVs namely C-Plus TV, C-Vision, 24 TV and SBTV in the port city. (BSS)
