Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has sought full-length support from the media to make the forthcoming Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign successful for a better future.
RCC Administrator and Commissioner of Rajshahi division Dr Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir said HPV vaccine is sufficient to prevent cervical cancer and media has an important role in generating mass-awareness in this regard.
Terming the child marriage and uncontrolled sexual relation as the risk factors of cervical cancer, he said teachers, parents and media workers should come forward and work together to prevent the disease.
HPV is the name of a very common group of viruses. They do not cause any problems in most people, but some types can cause genital warts or cancer. HPV affects the skin. There are more than 100 different types.
Dr Humayun Kabir made the observation while addressing a press conference in the City Bhaban’s conference hall here today.
All the girls aged between 10 and 14 will be brought under the vaccination. The 18-day long campaign will be held from October 24.
Chief Executive Officer Dr ABM Sharif Uddin, Secretary Mobarak Hossain and Chief Health Officer Dr AFM Anjuman Ara Begum also spoke.
RCC Administrator Dr Humayun Kabir said the government has been providing the vaccine free of cost and the targeted people have been asked to register their names in www.vaxepi.gov.bd website to get the vaccine.
He attributed that the HPV-Related cancers like cervical cancer can be prevented through the vaccine.
Dr AFM Anjuman Ara Begum said HPV vaccination can act as the body’s frontline defence, shielding it from HPV infection and other associated diseases and cancers. (BSS)
