UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi calls Prof Yunus

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi today called Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus by phone to congratulate him on his assumption of the leadership of the interim government of Bangladesh.

During the telephonic conversation, the UNHCR chief praised the chief adviser, saying he has taken up “an incredible task” to rebuild Bangladesh.

The two leaders discussed the Rohingya issue including about thousands of people who have been displaced by the ongoing conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

Prof Yunus sought his support for the dignified and voluntary return of over one million Rohingya people, who live in camps in Bangladesh, to their homeland in Myanmar.

He also sought assistance from the UN refugee agency for building a better future for young Rohingya children who are growing up inside the Bangladesh camps.

The UNHCR chief requested the chief adviser to attend a meeting on the Rohingya crisis on the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.

Filippo Grandi informed Prof Yunus that he plans to visit Bangladesh in October this year. (BSS)
