Sales begin in city’s cattle markets ahead of Eid

Sales of sacrificial animals began in the city’s makeshift cattle markets today ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Adha, to be celebrated across the country on June 29.

“Formal trading of sacrificial animals began in the city’s makeshift cattle markets from today. It will continue till Eid-day on June 29,” officials of both Dhaka south and north city corporations told BSS.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Public Relations officer Mokbul Hossain said this year a total of 10 cattle markets have been set up in the DNCC area while the lease holders of the makeshift markets were asked to run the markets following the city corporation guidelines to ensure smooth trading of animals.

Besides, 10 more cattle markets have been set up in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area this year, said DSCC Public Relations Officer Md Abu Naser.

He said sufficient security measures, including setting up CCTV cameras, installing ATM booths and deploying law enforcement agency members have been taken to ensure the safety of buyers and sellers of the sacrificial animals in the cattle markets.

Both the DNCC and DSCC officials said that the authorities of the city corporations did not designate any spot for slaughtering sacrificial animals this year rather they are encouraging the city dwellers to slaughter their animals in specific spots and manage the wastages properly.

“The DSCC has not been arranging slaughtering spots for the last two-three years as people do not want to come to the designated spots. But the city corporation is repeatedly urging the city dwellers to slaughter their sacrificial animals on specific spots so that the wastage can be managed easily,” said Abu Naser.

DNCC official Mokbul also said they did not arrange slaughtering spots for in the last one or two years but the DNCC authorities are encouraging the residents of the city to slaughter their animals following the government guidelines and manage wastages appropriately.
