Jute harvesting going on in full swing in Netrakona

Harvesting of jute, which is known as the golden fibre of Bangladesh, has been going on in full swing in all 10 upazilas of the district during the last one week.

Netrakona district is popularly known as “huge jute producing area” of the country.

The cultivation of jute is increasing every year in the district as the farmers are showing their keen interest in cultivating jute for earning huge cash money by selling their jute fibres at fair prices.

Crops specialists of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said the jute cultivators are expecting bumper production as they are getting better yielding rates in everywhere of the district.

Jute cultivators are now rendering their field-level service for rooting their jute plants in different water-bodies, they said.

The farmers are not facing any problem or barriers for rotting their jute plants as all the natural water bodies including canals, beels, rivers and haors in the district are now full of waters due to widespread rainfall for the last fortnight, they added.

Farmers cultivated jute on 4,569 hectares of land in the district with the target for producing nearly 45,325 bales of jute.

Of the total land, 690 hectares were brought under capsularies variety of jute, 225 hectares under Olitorious variety, 3,154 hectares under Kenaf
variety and 500 hectares of land under Mesta variety of jute, the officials said.

Deputy Director of the DAE Netrakona Mohammad Nuruzzaman said farmers cultivated jute successfully as the weather condition was favorable and the different state-run agencies including BADC, BCIC ensured supply of improved quality seeds and fertilizers to the door-steps of the cultivators following directives of the government. .

Apart from this, the crop specialists and field workers of the DAE here provided their field-level service to let the jute growers know the modern methods of jute cultivation for boosting production. (BSS)
