215250 tonnes Maize produced in Jamalpur

Farmers in the district got 21,5,250 tonnes of maize this year which is 29,788 tonnes more than last year production. According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources farmers
cultivated maize on 20,268 hectares of land which is 2,268 hectares more than
the cultivation target.

The office said last year farmers cultivate maize on 17, 463 hectares of
land. As farmers got boost yield of maize and its fair price last year, they
are gradually being interested to bring more land under maize cultivation.

Dewanganj Upazila Agriculture Officer, Alamgir Azad said farmers in the
upazila brought more land under maize cultivation due to profitable ground.
He said farmers can cultivate maize with low production cost and get more
return. He said a farmer can produce 35 to 45 mound maize (40 kilogram per
mound) from a bigha of land expending Taka 15,000 to 16,000. In this away
they can earn net profit Taka 20,000 to Taka 29,000 from a bigha of land, he
added.

According to DAE office, farmers got 74,288 tonnes maize on 7,075 hectares of
land in Dewanganj upazila while 36,013 tonnes from 3,350 hectares of land in
Bakshiganj 31,689 tonnes from 2,918 hectares of land in Sarishabari, 26,876
tonnes from 2,850 hectares in Madarganj, 24,498 tonnes from 2,050 hectares of
land in Islampur,13,936 tonnes from 1,230 hectares of land in Jamalpur sadar
and 7,950 tonnes from 795 hectares of land in Melandah upazila.

Deputy Director, DAE, Zakia Sultana said view to increase maize production
each of 6,300 small and marginal farmers got maize seed and fertilizer free
of cost in the district. (BSS)
