Spices price decline in Khulna kitchen markets

The prices of most of the essential spices at the city’s kitchen markets sow a declining trend compared to the last couple of days ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.

Due to the increase in imports, the price of cumin in the retail market has decreased significantly by Tk 400-500 per kg. Two months ago cumin was sold at Tk 1200 per kg. Now cumin is being sold at Tk 600-700 per kilogram, said Abul Hashem, the retail and wholesaler of Abul Hashem Store at Khulna BoroBazar.

Other spices like cardamom, cinnamon, prune, mace, nutmeg, cashew nuts, peanuts, and raisin are being sold with marginal profit, he said.

“It’s good for us that most of the prices are steady. We make marginal profits when the price increases because people buy less,” he added.

While talking to BSS, Mohammad Kamal, owner of Vai Vai Store at Boro Bazar kitchen market, said, garlic (China) and garlic (local) are being sold at Taka 220-240 and Taka 80-100 which were sold at over Taka 250 and Taka 150 respectively. Ginger is being sold at Taka 240-250 per kilogram (KG) against Taka 280, Kamal said.

The prices of cardamom (Elachi) and cinnamon (Daruchini) are being sold at Tk 3000-3200 and Tk 500-700 per kg. Clove (lobongo) is sold at Taka 1600-1800  per kg while cashew nuts Taka 1600-1700, peanuts Taka 350-400 and raisin Taka 700-800, he added.

The most common commodities for Eid Day, local cucumber and tomatoes are being sold at Taka 50-60 and Taka 20-25 which were sold at Taka 120-140 and Taka 40-50 at the beginning of the Ramadan, said Abdur Rahman, a retail seller of Rupsha Sondha Bazar.

City dwellers get relief as onion is being sold at Taka 45-50 which was sold at Taka 100 to Taka 120 per kg at the beginning of last month, he said, adding that green chilli is selling at Tk 60-70 per kg against Tk 120 earlier. (BSS)
