A fire that broke out at Khulna’s Salam Jute Mill in the Jabusa area of the Naihati Union of Rupsha upazila on Wednesday afternoon, was brought under control at night.
A total of 16 firefighting units including two of Bangladesh Navy
worked to bring the fire under control.
Around 750 tonnes of export-oriented jute products, 35,000 maunds of raw Jute, 700 metric tonnes of yarn and huge types of machinery of the mill worth about Taka 125 crore were fully gutted during the fire,
MMA Salam, owner of the Salam Jute Mill claimed to BSS today.
“It is a primary suspect, the final picture of damaged would be known after a total survey within a week”, he said, adding that “the Jute mill has Taka 50 crore insurance at Continental Insurance Company”.
They primarily suspected that the fire originated from a short circuit.
Talking to BSS Faruk Hossain Shikder, assistant director of the Khulna Fire Service Office said the fire originated from a machine room of the mill at around 5.40 pm yesterday.
In a moment, the fire turned into a devastating stage that spread some godown, machine rooms of the jute mill, he said.
On information, a total of 14 firefighting units of Khulna and Bagerhat rushed to the spot and tried to douse the ablaze, Later, two firefighting units of Bangladesh Navy joined with Fire Service units and were able to douse fire at around 11.15 pm last night, he added.
“We can’t immediately know how fire originated in the machine room and total loss of damage from the fire,” he said, adding that dumping activities are ongoing after gutting the mill from early today. (BSS)
