Terrorists remain active in social media: ATU chief

Bangladesh Police’s Anti Terrorism Unit (ATU) chief Additional Inspector General SM Ruhul Amin today said there is nothing to feel complacent that terrorism has ended as terrorists are very active in social media.

“We are noticing that terrorists are very active in social media. It has been revealed in cyber online patrolling of Anti Terrorism Unit,” he said.

The ATU chief was addressing as the chief discussant at a workshop on “Role of media in preventing extremism and militancy” at Police Staff College multipurpose hall in Mirpur here.

Ruhul Amin said they are working to ensure public security and create awareness among people.

“Media can play a crucial role in making people aware about the menace of terrorism. It can present how youths are getting involved in terrorism and its threat,” he said.

Noting that the relationship between police and journalists is very important, he said: “What does police want from journalists? Without cooperation from the media, police has no scope to work. Police want that media should present positive works.”

He said they are holding workshop about their new ideas and thoughts so that the image of police can be clear to people.

Police Staff College acting Rector Dr AFM Masum Rabbani addressed the workshop as the special guest with ATU DIG (admin) Mafiz Uddin Ahmed in the chair.

ATU Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Maniruzzaman delivered the welcome address while Dhaka University Mass Communication and Journalism Department’s Associate Professor Shabnam Azim presented the keynote paper.

ATU Police Super (media and awareness wing) Mohammad Aslam Khan, ATU Cyber Crime Wing Police Super Farhana Yasmin and ASP (media) Wahida Parveen were also present among others. (BSS)
