Farming of Cumin, a spice crop, has started under Gobindaganj upazila of the district for the first time amid much enthusiasm to the farmers.
According to the sources, Spice Research Institute, Bogura, took an initiative to train up the farmers on the farming of Cumin to meet the demand of the spice crops.
Accordingly, a good number of farmers of Gobindaganj upazila were selected and then they were imparted need base training on cumin farming.
After receiving the training, the selected farmers farmed cumin on their respective land this season in pilot form. The plants grew well which gives the farmers a prediction of boost production of cumin.
Dilbor Ali, a cumin farmer of Satail Batail village under Fulbari union of the upazila said as per the advices and suggestions of the officials of upazila agriculture office, he farmed the variety on his land this season for the first time.
As the plants grew well, he is expecting desired output against the crop, he also said.
Seeing the success of cumin farming, other farmers of the upazila are showing their interest to farm cumin in next seasons, he added.
Syed Mahmud Reza Munna, Upazila Agriculture Officer said the farmers are being motivated to farm the variety under Improved Varieties and Technology of Spices Expansion Project.
As the farmers have success in cumin farming on their land, necessary measures had been taken to expand the farming of the variety among the farmers in coming seasons.
Sub Assistant Agriculture Officers have been working in the field level of the upazila asked to motivate the farmers to farm cumin in a large scale to earn economic profit against the variety, he added.
In reply to a query, a number of demonstration plots have been set up in the upazila to draw the attention of the farmers on cumin farming. (BSS)
