Farmers get benefit with bumper Boro production in Jamalpur

The farmers of the district have financially benefitted as they got bumper production of Boro rice this year.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said the farmers got 561245 tones rice from 128590 hectares of land.

Farmer Kudrat Ullah of village Ghoradhap under Jamalpur Sadar Upazila told BSS that he got 24 mounds (40 kg) of high-breed variety paddy from per Bigha of land. He got huge benefit this year as he sold per mound of paddy at Tk 1040 in the local market.

Besides, farmers- Mahbub Ullah, Nargis, Nural Amin and Habibur Rahman of Jamalpuir Sadar Upazila also happy with the bumper production and fair prices of the Boro paddy.

The DAE office sources said the farmers got rice of high yielding variety 309564 tones, high-breed variety 251144 tones rice and local variety 537 tones.

According to upazila wise breakup of production 152767 tones rice in Jamalpur sadar upazila, 77986 tones in Sarishabari, 91351 tones in Melandah, 70489 tones in Islampur, 36734 tones in Dewanganj, 69705 tones in Madarganj and 62213 tones in Bakshiganj.

The office said the farmers cultivated 118 varieties of Boro paddy of which 77 were high-breed, 37 of high yielding and four were local variety.

Deputy Director of the DAE Zakia Sultana said the farmers got good yield of Boro as the government ensured availability of Boro seeds, fertilizer, irrigation, adequate supply of electricity and other agriculture inputs. Besides, the cultivation of short duration variety crop and motivational activities of the agriculture department were also behind the bumper production, she added. (BSS)
