55573 tones mustard likely to be produced in Jamalpur

A large number of lands were brought under mustard cultivation in the district which is expected to be produced a total of 55573 tones of mustard this year.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said mustard was cultivate in the district on 41165 hectares of land this year which is 8665 hectares more than the last year.

Training Officer of the DAE Pikon Kumar Saha said that favourable weather, government’s incentives and motivational works of the agriculture department have drifted the farmers to bring more land under mustard cultivation this year.

In a view to increase the production, the DAE disbursed mustard seed and fertilizer among the 54600 small and marginal farmers free of cost. Each of the farmers got one kilogram mustard seed and 10 kilograms DAP fertilizer and 10 kilograms of MOP fertilizer free of cost for cultivation on one Bigha of land.

The DAE office said the farmers cultivated mustard on 7950 hectares of land in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila. Besides 5380 hectares in Sarishabari, 6150 hectares in Melandah, 6150 hectares in Islampur, 4165 hectares in Dewanganj, 3850 hectares in Madarganj Upazila and 7520 hectares in Bakshiganj upazilas .

The Training Officer said if the favorable weather persists, farmers will get good yield of mustard this year. Harvesting of mustard will begin from mid of January next, he added. (BSS)
