Draft law on extension of tenure of BSMMU VC, pro-VC placed

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Amendment) Act, 2023 was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad in a bid to extend the tenure of vice chancellor, pro-vice chancellor and treasurer to four years from three years.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque today placed the bill in the House with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Piloting the bill, the health minister said the draft law was designed to bring changes in several places of the existing Act of 1998, Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain told a press briefing at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

With the latest amendment, the law has been amended two times.

“Now the tenure of vice chancellor, pro-vice chancellor and treasurer is three years, which has been extended to four years, keeping similarity to the tenures in other universities,” he said. The specialized university has 4,000 specialized doctors and 100 departments.

Raising objections to the bill, opposition lawmaker Fakhrul Imam of Mymensingh-8 said the decision of raising the tenure of the specialized doctors should be revised as the extension of the VC, Pro VC and other officials will hamper quality of service.

The minister urged the House to send the bill to the relevant parliamentary standing committee for providing report within seven days. (BSS)
