The parliament passed the Development
Board Laws (Repeal) Bill, 2023 on Tuesday.
The Bill was placed to dissolve some divisional and district development
boards.
The new law will replace the law of the military regime as the court declared
the regime illegal.
Law Minister Anisul Huq moved the bill in the House for passage along with
the recommendations of the concerned parliamentary standing committee for
further examination with Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Dr Shirin Sharmin
Chaudhury in the chair.
As per the Bill, Khulna Division Development Board Ordinance, 1976 (Ordinance
No-LXXV of 1976), Rajshahi Division Development Board Ordinance, 1976
(Ordinance No-LXXX of 1976), Dhaka Division Development Board Ordinance, 1976
(Ordinance No-LXXXI of 1976), Chittagong Division Development Board
Ordinance, 1976 (Ordinance No-LXXXIX of 1976), Chittagong District
Development Board Ordinance, 1982 (Ordinance No-XLVI of 1982) and Cumilla,
Noakhali and Sylhet Districts Development Board Ordinance, 1982 (Ordinance
No-XLVII of 1982) and Chittagong Division Development Board Ordinance, 1976
will be repealed.
In the parliament, lawmakers of the Jatiya Party proposed a change to the
title of the Bill saying that it caused confusion and many might feel that
all the development boards like Water Development Board would also be
dissolved through this Bill.
However, the law minister said that the original act, which was amended
through this Bill, has the same title. (BSS)
