Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman today said Bangladesh Police have the capacity to face any kind of challenge.
“Police and people should come forward to curb militancy and other crimes to ensure peace in the capital,” he told journalists after paying tributes to police officers who were killed in the militant attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in the city’s Gulshan area in 2016.
On that tragic day in 2016, a heinous terrorist attack was carried out at the Holey Artisan Bakery in which 22 people including nine Italians, seven Japanese, one US citizen and one Indian national were killed and many others were injured.
On the occasion of eight years of the tragic day, the DMP commissioner paid floral tributes to ‘Deepta Sapath’ sculpture built in front of the DMP’s Gulshan police station.
Replying to a question, he said militancy is a global problem and Bangladesh is not free from it. However, the anti-terrorism unit, counter terrorism and transnational crime unit and other units of the police are in a very good position in terms of their skills and capacity against terrorism, he said.
“Bangladesh has been recognized as a role model in the world in fighting against terrorism. We saw that operations are carried out after terrorist attacks in different countries. But Bangladesh is the only example where we have been able to conduct various operations before the terrorist attacks. We have been able to eliminate terrorists in many cases by carrying out intelligence-based operations and operations with advance information,” he added.
Habibur Rahman said actions against militancy and terrorism are being carried out and it will be continued.
Replying to another question, he said militancy is a big challenge, adding, “In addition to all activities on behalf of our government to combat militancy, people from all sections especially media personalities should come forward. Parents or guardians should aware about their children. They should pay attention to their beloved children.”
Bangladesh Police Service Association, 30th BCS Police Forum and Bangladesh Police Association separately paid tributes at the ‘Deepta Sapath’.
Additional Commissioners AKM Hafiz Akhtar and Md Asaduzzaman; Joint Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and officers of various ranks were present. (BSS)
